Peter Safar introduces mouth to mouth ventilation

1960

CPR shown to be effective.

1966

National Academy of Sciences, publishes “Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of modern Society”

1966

Highway Safety Act of 1966 establishes Emergency Medical Services Program in the Department of Transportation.

1966

Eugene Nagel trained Miami firefighters in CPR

1967

Lancet publishes findings from Belfast MCCU project on August 5

1967

Dr. Nagel begins gathering telemetry data on ECG’s presents findings and proposal for defibrillation to Fire Chief the following year.

1968

AT&T designates 911 as national emergency access number in the U.S.

1968

American College of Emergency Physicians is established.

1972

Department of Health, Education and Welfare allocates 16 million dollars to EMS demonstration programs in 5 states.

1973

1st European Congress of Disaster Medicine.

1973

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation appropriates 15 million dollars to fund 44 EMS projects in 32 states and Puerto Rico

1973

The Emergency Medical Services Systems Act is passed in the U.S.

1973

AHA recommends CPR training for public.

1973

First Emergency Medicine residency programs in the U.S.

1979

Systems of Trauma Care: A study of 2 counties is published.

1980

EMT’s in suburban Seattle trained to defibrillate

1980

Emergency Medicine becomes a recognized medical specialty in the U.S.

1981

Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act consolidates EMS funding into state health services block grants, and eliminates funding under the EMSS Act.

1982

National Association of EMS Physicians established in the US.

1984

The EMS for Children program provides funding under the Public health Act to improve EMS pediatric services.

1985

National Research Council publishes “Injury in America: A continuing Public health Problem”.

1988

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration initiates the Statewide EMS Technical assessment program based on ten key components of EMS

1990

The Trauma Care Systems and Development Act encourages development of inclusive trauma care systems and provides funding to state.

1991

Utstein method developed at conference at Utstein abbey in Norway

1991

Disaster Medicine becomes part of curriculum in Polish medical schools

1992

1st Winter School of Emergency Medicine by Wroclaw Medical University

1993

Uniform Prehospital EMS Data Elements and Definitions published in U.S.

1993

Emergency Medical Services for Children published, pointing out the deficiencies in addressing pediatric emergencies in America.

1995

1st International Forum of Emergency Medicine held in Poland

1995

Scottish Ambulance Service achieves Trust status.

Emergency Medicine becomes a recognized specialty in Poland
