Purpose:

To implement a standardized method for teaching and promoting CPR, rescue breathing and the Heimlich maneuver.

To have Poland become the first country to implement a national CPR training initiative and become a model for other countries.

Objectives:

  • To teach Polish students how to save a life using CPR, rescue breathing and the Heimlich maneuver.
  • Reduce the number of cardiovascular deaths in Poland through education and prevention.

Overview:

The American Heart Association’s curriculums “CPR for School’s” have been translated into Polish. The objective is to introduce this curriculum as a formal part of the school curriculum.

The program will be promoted as a Polish CPR program utilizing the materials of the American Heart Association who shares its scientific and educational materials with the international community..

Cardiovascular Disease is the leading cause of death in Poland as it is in the United States. Currently no standardized training system is used to teach CPR in Poland to the lay public. Using the American Heart Association Curriculum to target a younger generation could save lives by increasing the number of trained individuals who can perform CPR.

In order to reach students in Poland a considerable amount of instructors will need to be trained. A pilot project was conducted using medical students who were trained as CPR instructors to teach high school students. The program received considerable positive feedback from the high school student participants and medial student instructors. Poland has 11 medical schools. Interested students will be trained as CPR instructors and assigned to teach courses in local high schools. Student-instructors who show considerable talent will be trained as instructor trainers. Once a sufficient pool of instructors is created the program can be expanded to reach the rest of the general public.

In 2003, Dr Czekajlo approached Jurek Owsiak and the Great Orchestra for Christmas Charity in Poland to discuss a collaboration to roll out the CPR for Schools program. It has proved to be a productive relationship with the GOCC having initiated CPR in Schools for Grades 1-3.

Thanks to the passion and dedication of Jurek Owsiak and the instructors of the Great Orchestra for Christmas Charity Poland is a world leader in the CPR for Schools Program.

In 3 months the GOCC volunteers were able to train 1708 teachers from 885 schools as instructors who were then responsible for the training of 41,600 school children.

In 12 months, 300,000 students trained in CPR and 5000 teachers as instructors from 3000 schools across the country.
